How to Preserve Your Wedding Bouquet

Once you have it in your hands, you’ll want to keep it forever!

Once you have it in your hands, you’ll want to keep it forever!

It’s not something that is usually a priority in the eyes of most brides, but then, many brides have also spoken about how they wish they had kept their bouquet instead of immediately throwing it away. Here, we discover the various ways in which you can preserve your wedding bouquet and have another special keepsake from your big day!

Frame it!

You can either have your flowers professionally pressed or you can have a go at some DIY- either way, it’s a great way to preserve your wedding bouquet and have it displayed in a frame as art in your home.

Doing it yourself involves pressing some petals between a thick book over a period of time that can take as long as three months. A professional however, will get it done for you in next to no time, pressed and placed in a frame with a complete and polished look.

Use silica gel to preserve your wedding bouquet

If you’d like to get your own hands dirty, silica gel is another good option to preserve the bouquet. More like a fine powder than a gel, it absorbs water content as well as preserving colour.

Either submerge the bouquet in an airtight container filled with silica gel and ensure that the flowers are covered completely for a week or individually brush every inch of the bouquet with a fine paintbrush after grinding the silica gel down. Again, leave for a week in an airtight container then brush with hairspray or artist’s fixative spray and leave to dry.

Freeze your flowers!

Although this is the best option for keeping your flowers looking almost exactly like they did on the wedding day, it is the most expensive. This process involves a professional spraying the bouquet with starch to preserve the colour then placing it in a freeze dryer removing all liquid.

Whatever process you wish to use, you must act as soon as possible! The flowers need to be fresh if you want to keep them although that may present a problem with most newlyweds being on honeymoon.

The best option if you find yourself in this situation, is to hand your bouquet over to your maid of honour or a trusted friend to take care of all things floral while you soak up some sun!
