Our favourite wedding movies and the oh-so-important lessons they teach!
After a long day at work, there’s nothing I love more than settling down to a chick-flick with a hot water bottle and a packet of chocolate digestives in hand- and whether you’re getting married or not, we all know that wedding movies make the perfect chick-flicks.
But, did you know brides and grooms-to-be that there’s also a lot to be learnt from our favourite wedding movies? With a good dose of comedy, a peppering of drama and a whole lotta love, our list of movies to watch before your big day may even teach you a lesson or two about the trials and tribulations of planning a wedding.
So go on, kick back, relax and indulge in these 5 movies to watch before your wedding. It’s about time you took a day off from wedding planning, after all.
If you haven’t watched this movie yet, I have to ask: what the hell have you been doing with your life? One of my all time favourite chick-flicks, Bridesmaids not only taught me that female competition is exhausting and pointless, but it also showed the importance of friendship. Never - repeat - never let a wedding come between a good friendship, and a crucial part of this is always keeping your bridal party in mind when planning your wedding. Choose the bridesmaids’ dresses for them and keep in mind that not everyone can afford to fly to Las Vegas for a bachelorette party. Oh, and befriend someone who gives away puppies as wedding favours of course.
This is a film I can watch over and over again without getting tired of it. Its most important lesson? Don’t become a bridezilla. It’s not worth sacrificing friends and family for, but to do so you may have to make sacrifices. Be willing to compromise your dream wedding for another slightly less dreamier wedding. Just because you couldn’t marry in your favourite venue it doesn’t mean your wedding won’t be as special as you always dreamt of.
I refuse to accept that anyone would plan a wedding without watching 27 Dresses. This one will have you thanking your lucky stars that you’ve bagged your dream man, and will make you laugh and cry all at the same time. Prepare to swoon in all the wedding glory with gorgeous dresses and totally extravagant wedding themes. As for its lesson, it teaches us that your time will come and it will be everything you ever hoped for. Try on enough dresses and you’re bound to find ‘The One’.
This film’s ending was totally unexpected. After planning the most beautiful exotic wedding that the whole world would probably die for, Sophie and Sky don’t even get married?! Crazy. However, it proves that sometimes you don’t need to get married to prove your love. Do what feels right, and be spontaneous! Just make sure you have someone else willing to get married on the same day at the same time, you know, so it’s not all gone to waste. After all, love is song that never ends!
Meet the Parents
Meet the Parents is a classic laugh a minute film that will make you incredibly grateful that your future father-in-law doesn’t own a lie detector. But, at the same time it will also teach you that occasionally your in-laws will be pricks. It’s kind of their job, and you’ll just have to find a way of dealing with it without making up ridiculous lies to impress them. Oh, and don’t invite your ex to your wedding, however close you are. If it makes your partner feel uncomfortable then it’s not worth it, and let’s be honest, it’s plain weird.
